Testosterone treatment should be carefully assessed and monitored.

Some women may also notice improvements in energy, wellbeing and motivation, although testosterone is not routinely prescribed solely for symptoms such as tiredness, brain fog, low mood or weight changes. Your LIVVE clinician will assess your symptoms, hormone profile and overall health before deciding whether testosterone may be appropriate for you.

Symptoms and suitability

When might testosterone be discussed?

Low libido in midlife is often multifactorial. Before prescribing testosterone, a clinician should consider oestrogen levels, vaginal or bladder symptoms, relationship factors, stress, sleep, mood, pain, medicines and other health conditions.

  • Persistent low sexual desire

Reduced sexual interest that is ongoing and distressing to you.

  • Low arousal or pleasure

Reduced response, sensation or satisfaction that has changed from your normal.

  • Symptoms despite HRT

Low desire that continues after oestrogen/HRT has been optimised where appropriate.

  • Distress or relationship impact

Symptoms that affect confidence, intimacy or wellbeing.

  • After surgical menopause

Symptoms may be more noticeable after removal of both ovaries.

  • Other causes ruled out

Fatigue, mood and medication factors should be considered too.

What is Androfeme?

Specifically formulated for women with a precise, measured daily dose.

Androfeme® is a transdermal testosterone cream. It is applied to the skin and absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream.

Unlike testosterone gels originally developed for men, Androfeme® is specifically designed for women and is supplied with an applicator to help measure an accurate daily dose. This helps keep testosterone levels within the normal female range and reduces the risk of unwanted side effects.

In menopause care, testosterone is usually considered after conventional HRT has been reviewed and low sexual desire remains a significant concern.

Where Androfeme fits

Androfeme compared with other testosterone options

Some patients may have heard of testosterone gels that were originally developed for men being prescribed for women at carefully adjusted doses. Androfeme is one option your clinician may discuss with you. The right choice depends on your symptoms, medical history, blood results and treatment goals.

  • Tostran® pump gel

Tostran: A testosterone gel that may be prescribed for women at a lower dose where clinically appropriate.

  • Testogel® sachets

Testogel: A testosterone gel that may be prescribed for women at a lower dose where clinically appropriate.

Realistic expectations

What to expect in the first 3 months

Testosterone is not an instant libido switch. The first few months are about correct application, tolerability, symptom tracking and blood-test monitoring.

  1. Weeks 1–4

You may not notice much change yet. Focus on applying the correct amount consistently and watching for early side effects such as oily skin, spots or irritation.

  2. Weeks 4–8

Some people begin to notice changes in sexual desire, arousal, confidence or response. Others need longer.

  3. Around 3 months

This is the key review point. Your LIVVE clinician will look at symptoms, side effects and blood-test results before deciding whether to continue, adjust or stop.

  4. By 6 months

If there has been no meaningful improvement despite correct use and safe blood levels, testosterone may not be the right treatment for you.

Your LIVVE pathway

How assessment and prescribing works

We keep the process clear from the start, so you understand each step before treatment is prescribed.

  1. Complete your assessment

We review symptoms, libido changes, menopause stage, medication, medical history and treatment goals.

  2. Check HRT and other causes

Your clinician considers whether oestrogen, vaginal symptoms, mood, sleep, pain or other factors should be addressed first.

  3. Baseline blood tests

Baseline blood testing is completed within 3 months before starting treatment. Total testosterone is checked, and SHBG may provide additional information in selected cases.

  4. Prescribe and review

If suitable, you receive dose instructions, application advice, side-effect guidance and planned follow-up testing.

Dose and duration

How long does one Androfeme tube last?

Androfeme 1% cream contains 10mg testosterone per ml. A common starting dose is 0.5ml daily, equal to 5mg testosterone per day. At that dose, a 50ml tube lasts about 100 days.

Your prescriber may adjust your dose based on symptoms, side effects and blood results. Do not increase the dose yourself.

How long Androfeme lasts
Prescribed dose Daily testosterone Approximate tube duration
0.25ml daily 2.5mg About 200 days
0.5ml daily 5mg About 100 days
0.75ml daily 7.5mg About 66 days
1ml daily 10mg About 50 days

Higher doses require careful clinical justification and monitoring.

How to use Androfeme

Apply once daily to clean, dry, hair-free skin.

Use the applicator to measure the dose your clinician has prescribed. Androfeme is usually applied to a clean, dry, hair-free area of skin such as the upper outer thigh or lower abdomen. Some people apply testosterone to the forearm, but this may increase the chance of transfer to others, so LIVVE will advise the most suitable application site for your routine.

Measure carefully: testosterone dosing for women is small. Use the supplied applicator and do not estimate by squeezing out a random amount.

  • Apply once daily at around the same time each day.

  • Use only the dose prescribed for you.

  • Rub in until absorbed and allow the cream to dry before dressing.

  • Wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed, unless your leaflet or clinician advises differently.

  • Avoid washing, showering or swimming for at least 2 hours after applying.

  • Wash hands after application.

  • Avoid transfer to children, pets or partners.

  • Do not apply to genital skin, breasts, face or broken/irritated skin.

Application rules

Small details make Androfeme safer to use.

These practical rules can help you use Androfeme safely and consistently once treatment starts.

  • Measure the dose with the supplied applicator.

  • Apply to clean, dry, hair-free skin as directed.

  • Rub in until absorbed and wait at least 10 minutes before dressing.

  • Avoid washing, showering or swimming for at least 2 hours after applying.

  • Wash your hands after applying.

  • Do not apply more than prescribed.

  • Avoid transfer to children, pets or partners.

  • Cover the area once dry if close skin contact is likely.

  • Tell your clinician if acne, hair growth or scalp hair thinning develops.

  • Keep follow-up blood tests and reviews even if you feel well.

Suitability and safety

Androfeme is not suitable for everyone.

Your clinician will check whether testosterone is appropriate for you and whether other causes of low libido need addressing first. You should mention pregnancy possibility, breastfeeding, cancer history, liver disease, severe acne, hair loss, unwanted hair growth, voice changes, clot/cardiovascular history and all medicines or supplements you take.

  • Acne or oilier skin
  • Increased facial/body hair
  • Scalp hair thinning
  • Application-site irritation
  • Mood changes
  • Rare voice changes if levels are too high

Side effects

Possible side effects and what to do

Most people tolerate carefully dosed testosterone well, but side effects are more likely if testosterone levels rise too high. This is why LIVVE includes blood-test monitoring as part of the pathway.

Possible Androfeme side effects and recommended actions
Possible side effect What to do
Oily skin or mild acne Mention this at review, especially if it is worsening or new for you.
Increased facial or body hair Tell your clinician; your level or dose may need checking.
Mood changes or irritability Track when it started and discuss with LIVVE, especially if it feels out of character.
Headaches Seek advice if new, persistent, severe or different from your usual pattern.
Scalp hair thinning Contact your clinician promptly rather than increasing or stopping the dose yourself.
Voice deepening Rare, but seek medical advice quickly as this can be serious and may not fully reverse.

When to contact LIVVE

Get advice before changing your dose.

This block reduces anxiety and sets clear boundaries around safe self-management.

  • Side effects are affecting your quality of life.

  • You develop acne, unwanted hair growth or scalp hair thinning.

  • You notice voice changes.

  • You have no improvement after 3 months.

  • You think you have used too much.

  • Someone else may have had repeated skin contact with the application area.

Blood-test monitoring

Monitoring is part of the treatment — not an optional extra.

Testosterone should be kept within the female physiological range. Blood tests help your clinician check whether the dose is safe and whether symptoms match the blood picture.

If Androfeme is prescribed, LIVVE will remind you when your monitoring is due. In most cases, your blood test and treatment review need to be completed before your next prescription can be approved.

After prescribing

What happens once you start Androfeme?

Starting treatment is only one part of the journey. LIVVE follow-up helps you understand expected timelines, side effects and when treatment may need adjusting.

  • Early symptom review

Check sexual desire, arousal, distress, wellbeing factors and any side effects before increasing dose.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • What is Androfeme used for?

Androfeme is used under specialist guidance for women with persistent low sexual desire, including hypoactive sexual desire disorder, especially where HRT and other contributory factors have been reviewed.

  • Is Androfeme licensed in the UK?

Androfeme received UK MHRA approval in 2025, with wider UK product availability expected through the licensed route. Availability can still depend on supply route, formulary position and the prescribing service.

  • How much Androfeme do I use?

The common starting dose is 0.5ml daily, equal to 5mg testosterone, but your prescriber may recommend a different dose based on your assessment and blood results.

  • How long does one tube last?

A 50ml tube lasts about 100 days if using 0.5ml daily. Higher or lower doses change how long the tube lasts.

  • Do I need blood tests?

Yes. LIVVE uses a monitoring pathway that includes a baseline blood test within 3 months before starting treatment, a first review and blood test 3 months after dispatch, a second review and blood test 6 months after the first review, and annual review and blood test every 12 months thereafter.

  • Will Androfeme help fatigue or brain fog?

Some women may also notice improvements in energy, wellbeing and motivation, although testosterone is not routinely prescribed solely for symptoms such as tiredness, brain fog, low mood or weight changes. Fatigue and brain fog should also be assessed for other causes.

  • Can Androfeme cause facial hair or acne?

Yes, androgenic side effects can include acne, oilier skin, increased facial/body hair or scalp hair thinning. These are more likely if levels become too high, which is why monitoring matters.

  • Can I use Androfeme without HRT?

Sometimes this may be considered, but guidance commonly recommends optimising oestrogen/HRT first where appropriate. Your clinician will advise based on your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals.

  • Do I need testosterone or does my HRT need reviewing first?

You may not need testosterone straight away. Low libido can be affected by oestrogen levels, vaginal dryness, painful sex, sleep, stress, mood, medicines, relationship factors and wider health. Your LIVVE clinician will review your current HRT, symptoms, blood results where needed and overall health before deciding whether testosterone is appropriate.

  • What is HSDD?

HSDD stands for hypoactive sexual desire disorder. It describes a persistent or recurrent loss of sexual desire that causes personal distress and is not better explained by another medical, psychological, relationship or medication-related cause.

  • What if my libido is low but my testosterone blood test is normal?

Blood results are only one part of the picture. Libido can be affected by oestrogen deficiency, vaginal dryness, pain, stress, mood, sleep, medication, relationship factors and other health conditions.

  • Can I apply Androfeme to my forearm?

Some people do, but the forearm may increase the chance of skin-to-skin transfer. LIVVE will advise the safest application site for your routine.

  • How long should I wait before getting dressed?

Wait at least 10 minutes before dressing, unless your prescriber or product leaflet advises otherwise.

  • Can I shower after applying Androfeme?

Avoid washing, showering or swimming for at least 2 hours after applying, unless your clinician or product leaflet advises differently.

  • What happens if I use too much?

Do not apply extra the next day. Contact LIVVE for advice, especially if you notice acne, unwanted hair growth, irritability, scalp hair thinning or voice changes.

  • Will Androfeme make me grow facial hair?

At the correct female dose, this is not expected for most people, but unwanted hair growth can happen if levels become too high. Monitoring helps reduce this risk.

  • What if I don’t feel better after 3 months?

Book a review. Your clinician may check blood results, application technique, HRT balance, vaginal symptoms, stress, mood, sleep or other causes before changing the dose.

  • Can Androfeme transfer to children, pets or partners?

Yes, testosterone cream can transfer through skin-to-skin contact if someone touches the application area before it has fully absorbed. Apply Androfeme only as directed, allow it to dry before dressing, wash your hands after use, and cover the application area with clothing if close contact is likely. This is especially important around children, pets, and anyone who is pregnant or could become pregnant. Avoid letting children or pets lick, touch or rub against the application site. If accidental contact happens, wash the exposed skin with soap and water where appropriate. If a pet is exposed, wipe or wash the affected fur/skin area if safe to do so and contact a vet for advice if you are concerned. Contact LIVVE if the person exposed is a child, pregnant or could be pregnant.

  • Can I use Androfeme for tiredness or brain fog?

Not on its own. Testosterone is mainly recommended for persistent low sexual desire related to menopause when HRT alone has not helped. Tiredness and brain fog need a wider assessment.
