How to Use Estriol Vaginal Cream: Application, Dosage and What to Expect

Estriol vaginal cream is a local oestrogen treatment used for vaginal and vulval symptoms associated with lower oestrogen during perimenopause and after menopause.

It is applied directly to the tissues affected by dryness, soreness, burning, irritation or discomfort during sex. It may also support urinary tissues when menopause-related changes are contributing to symptoms.

1. Prepare the tube: Remove the cap. If the tube is new, use the point in the cap to pierce the seal as described in the leaflet.

4. Remove and recap the tube: Unscrew the filled applicator and replace the cap.
5. Insert the applicator gently: Lie down or use another comfortable position. Insert the applicator only as far as is comfortable.
6. Release the cream: Press the plunger slowly and fully, then remove the applicator gently.
7. Clean the reusable applicator: Pull the plunger out of the barrel. Wash both parts in warm or hand-hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly and allow them to dry. Do not use boiling water or harsh household detergents.

Some patients may be advised to apply a small amount around the vaginal entrance or vulval area when external soreness, burning, splitting or irritation is also present.

Only use the cream externally when this has been recommended as part of your treatment plan. External use does not automatically replace the prescribed internal dose.

Ask for clear instructions if your symptoms are mainly external: confirm how much to use, where to apply it and whether the internal applicator dose should continue.

Treatment is commonly prescribed more frequently at the beginning, while the tissues respond, and then reduced to an ongoing maintenance schedule.

For Estriol 1 mg/g cream, a common routine is one applicator filled to the marked ring each day for two to three weeks, up to a maximum of four weeks.
