Eligibility and clinical assessment

Could Wegovy be suitable for you?

Wegovy may be considered for adults living with obesity, or some adults living with overweight and a weight-related health condition. Eligibility is not based on BMI alone.

LIVVE’s Wegovy service is currently for eligible adults only. Although Wegovy product information includes adolescent use in some circumstances, this page describes LIVVE’s adult weight-management pathway.

  1. Weight and health history

Your BMI, waist measurement, previous treatment and weight-related health risks are reviewed.

  2. Medical suitability

Your clinician considers diabetes, digestive disease, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney health and other relevant risks. Tell LIVVE if you have gastroparesis or delayed stomach emptying, as Wegovy may not be suitable if this is severe.

  3. Current medicines

Wegovy must not be combined with another GLP-1 medicine. Diabetes medicines may need adjustment.

  4. Pregnancy planning

Wegovy is not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding and should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy.

  5. Nutrition and eating patterns

We consider whether reduced appetite could make it harder to meet protein, fibre, fluid and micronutrient needs.

  6. Your goals

Your plan should prioritise health, function and sustainable progress rather than promise a fixed amount of weight loss.

How Wegovy injectionworks

It helps regulate appetite and fullness.

Semaglutide acts like the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone, helping the brain regulate appetite and food intake. Many people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.

It also slows stomach emptying, which may support fullness but can contribute to nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea or indigestion.

Wegovy is not a stimulant and should not remove the need to eat. Regular nourishing meals and adequate fluid remain important.

Dose progression

A staged pathway designed to improve tolerability

The standard schedule increases every four weeks from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg, but your clinician may pause or slow escalation if side effects are difficult. The 7.2 mg dose is a further maintenance option only for some adults living with obesity and is not an automatic next step.

  1. Weeks 1–4

0.25 mg once weekly. Learn the pen technique and monitor appetite, hydration and side effects.

  2. Weeks 5–12

Move through 0.5 mg and 1 mg only as prescribed and tolerated.

  3. Weeks 13–16

1.7 mg is the final escalation step before standard maintenance.

  4. From week 17

2.4 mg is the standard maintenance dose. If clinically appropriate, 7.2 mg may be discussed later as an additional maintenance option after time on 2.4 mg.

Using your pen

Inject once weekly on the same day.

Each standard UK Wegovy FlexTouch pen contains four doses. Attach a new disposable needle for every injection and use only the dose shown on your prescribed pen.

Always follow the leaflet supplied with your own pen. Do not set a dose by counting clicks.

  • Check the correct medicine and strength before every injection.

  • Attach a new needle for every dose.

  • Check the flow only before the first injection from each new pen.

  • Inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm.

  • Rotate the exact injection spot each week.

  • Keep the dose button pressed and count slowly to six after the counter reaches zero.

  • Remove the needle after every injection and place it in a sharps bin.

  • Never share your pen or store it with a needle attached.

Side effects and safety

What you may notice, and when to get help

Digestive side effects are common, especially when treatment starts or the dose increases.

  • Common effects

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, tiredness, dizziness and injection-site reactions can occur.

  • Contact LIVVE

Ask for advice if symptoms persist, worsen, affect eating or drinking, cause repeated vomiting or make normal activity difficult.

  • Seek urgent help

Get urgent medical advice for severe persistent abdominal pain, serious allergic symptoms, severe dehydration, sudden loss of vision or rapidly worsening eyesight. Also seek urgent advice for severe constipation with stomach pain, bloating, vomiting or inability to pass wind or stool.

Do not increase your dose to overcome a plateau. Severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration and affect kidney function. Any dose change must be agreed with your prescriber.

Supporting healthy weight loss

Protect nutrition and muscle while appetite is lower

A good programme is about more than eating as little as possible. LIVVE should help you maintain nourishing intake and build habits that can continue beyond medication.

  • Protein

Include a useful source at meals to support muscle maintenance and recovery.

  • Fibre

Increase gradually with fluid to support bowel health and reduce constipation.

  • Hydration

Drink regularly, especially if nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea reduces intake.

  • Strength and movement

Combine regular movement with resistance exercise where appropriate.

Your LIVVE pathway

How assessment, prescribing and follow-up work

  1. Complete your assessment

Share your medical history, medicines, weight history, previous treatment and goals.

  2. Clinical review

A LIVVE prescriber checks eligibility, risks, interactions and whether Wegovy is appropriate.

  3. Prescription and delivery

If approved, your prescribed strength is dispensed with instructions and discreet delivery.

  4. Ongoing support

Reviews cover side effects, appetite, nutrition, weight progress and dose suitability.
