Key application steps

Prime a new pump as shown in its leaflet and discard the first dose dispensed.

Use only the number of full pumps prescribed.

Apply a thin layer to a large area of clean, dry, intact skin on the arms and shoulders or inner thighs, as directed. Change application sites regularly.

Do not apply on or near the breasts, on the vulva or on broken skin.

Let the gel dry for 5 minutes before dressing.

Wash your hands with soap and water after applying.

Avoid skin-to-skin contact with the application area for at least 1 hour. Keep the area covered to prevent transfer, especially to children.

Avoid washing the area or applying other skin products for at least 1 hour.

Keep away from flames and smoking until the gel has dried.

What is Oestrogel?
An oestrogen gel applied to the skin once a day.
Oestrogel contains estradiol and is absorbed through the skin. It contains oestrogen only and is used once daily.
Understanding womb protection
Will I also need progesterone?
Oestrogel contains oestrogen only. If you still have your womb, you will normally need progesterone or another progestogen to protect the womb lining.
If you have had your womb removed, progesterone is often not needed, although your clinician will confirm what applies to you.
Treatment options
How the main HRT options differ
Oestrogel is one way to take oestrogen. Your clinician will consider how each route is used, how it fits your routine and whether it is suitable for your medical history.

What to expect
Some symptoms may improve within a few weeks, but allow up to 3 months
Everyone responds differently. Oestrogel begins delivering oestrogen through the skin from the first application, but symptom improvement is usually gradual. Consistent daily use is important when judging whether the dose and treatment plan are working for you.

The first days
Focus on learning the correct pump dose and application routine. Mild breast tenderness, headaches, bloating or spotting can occur while your body adjusts.

The first few weeks
Hot flushes and night sweats are often among the first symptoms to improve. Better sleep may follow as overnight symptoms reduce.

Up to 3 months
Mood, sleep, vaginal symptoms and wider wellbeing may take longer. This is usually the right point to assess the overall response.

Review and adjust
If symptoms remain troublesome after around 3 months, your clinician can review the dose, application, progesterone plan or whether another HRT route may suit you better.

Safety first
Check suitability before treatment
Your clinician will review the benefits and risks of your full HRT plan. Tell us about your personal and family medical history and all medicines you use.
Some of these conditions mean HRT must not be used; others need further assessment. Read the leaflet for the complete restrictions. HRT can increase risks including breast cancer, blood clots and stroke; the risks depend on the treatment and your individual circumstances.

Current, previous or suspected breast cancer, or a hormone-sensitive cancer.

Unexplained vaginal bleeding or untreated thickening of the womb lining.

Previous or current blood clots, a clotting disorder, stroke, angina or heart attack.

Liver disease, porphyria or an allergy to the medicine or any ingredient.

Pregnancy or breastfeeding. HRT is not contraception.

Avoid transferring the gel to another person. If accidental contact occurs, wash their skin with soap and water. Seek medical advice if a child shows unexpected breast development or other hormonal changes.
Side effects
Side effects and when to seek help
Side effects can occur when starting or changing HRT. Contact LIVVE if they are severe, persistent or affecting daily life.

Breast tenderness and headache
These can occur, particularly after starting or changing treatment.

Bleeding
Spotting may occur, but heavy, prolonged, new or unexpected bleeding needs assessment.

Skin irritation
Alcohol in the gel may irritate sensitive or damaged skin.

Other effects
Nausea, abdominal discomfort, swelling or mood changes can occur. Contact LIVVE if troublesome.
