Realistic Eligibility and clinical assessment

Could Mounjaro be suitable for you?

Mounjaro may be considered for adults living with obesity, or some adults living with overweight alongside a weight-related health condition. Private prescribing still requires an individual assessment and is not based on BMI alone.

  1. Weight and health history

Your current BMI, previous weight-management attempts, waist measurement and weight-related health risks are considered.

  2. Medical suitability

Your clinician reviews conditions such as diabetes, digestive disease, gallbladder problems, pancreatitis history and other relevant risks.

  3. Current medicines

Some medicines need extra care or adjustment, including insulin, sulphonylureas and medicines affected by delayed stomach emptying.

  4. Pregnancy and contraception

Mounjaro is not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Your clinician will discuss pregnancy plans and contraception where relevant.

  5. Nutrition and eating patterns

We consider whether reduced appetite could make it harder to meet protein, fibre, fluid and micronutrient needs.

  6. Your goals and expectations

Your plan should focus on health, function and sustainable progress rather than promising a fixed amount of weight loss.

How Mounjaro works

It helps regulate appetite and fullness.

Tirzepatide acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors. These pathways influence appetite, food intake and blood-sugar regulation. Many people feel fuller sooner, less hungry between meals and better able to manage cravings.

Mounjaro also delays stomach emptying, particularly when treatment begins or the dose changes. This contributes to fullness but can also cause digestive side effects.

It is not a stimulant and it should not remove the need to eat. Regular, nourishing meals and adequate fluid remain important.

Dose progression

A gradual pathway, not a race to the maximum dose

The usual starting dose is 2.5 mg once weekly. Any increase is made in 2.5 mg steps after at least four weeks, but only when clinically appropriate.

  1. Weeks 1–4

Start with 2.5 mg once weekly. Focus on injection technique, hydration, regular meals and learning how your body responds.

  2. Review response

Your clinician considers side effects, appetite, food intake, weight change and any relevant blood-sugar readings.

  3. Stay or increase

You may remain on the current dose or move up by 2.5 mg. An increase is not automatic every month.

  4. Find your maintenance dose

The aim is an effective, tolerable dose that supports progress without unnecessary side effects.

Using your pen

Inject once weekly on the same day.

Use Mounjaro exactly as shown by your clinician, pharmacist and the pen instructions. Inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, rotating the injection site.

Always follow the patient information leaflet supplied with your own pen and contact LIVVE if any step is unclear.

  • Use the prescribed strength only.

  • Take one dose each week on the same day where possible.

  • Use a new compatible needle for every injection.

  • Rotate injection sites and avoid sore, bruised or damaged skin.

  • Do not share your pen or needles.

  • Store and dispose of the pen and needles as instructed.

  • Never extract medicine from the pen with a syringe.

Side effects and safety

What you may notice, and when to get help

Digestive side effects are common, particularly when starting or increasing the dose. They are often manageable, but persistent or severe symptoms need clinical advice.

  • Common effects

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, tiredness, reduced appetite and injection-site redness or itching can occur.

  • Contact LIVVE

Speak to the team if symptoms are persistent, worsening, affecting eating or drinking, causing repeated vomiting or making normal daily activity difficult.

  • Seek urgent help

Get urgent medical advice for severe, persistent abdominal pain, signs of dehydration, a serious allergic reaction, or symptoms suggesting gallbladder or pancreatic inflammation.

Do not increase your dose to overcome a plateau or because you have fewer side effects. Changes must be approved by your prescriber. Severe vomiting, diarrhoea or poor fluid intake can cause dehydration and may affect kidney function.

Supporting healthy weight loss

Protect nutrition and muscle while appetite is lower

A good programme is about more than eating as little as possible. LIVVE should help you maintain nourishing intake and build habits that can continue beyond medication.

  • Protein

Include a useful source at meals to support muscle maintenance and recovery.

  • Fibre

Increase gradually alongside fluid to support bowel health and manage constipation.

  • Hydration

Drink regularly, especially if nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea reduces intake.

  • Strength and movement

Combine regular activity with resistance exercise where appropriate for your health and ability.

Your LIVVE pathway

How assessment, prescribing and follow-up work

Whether you’re starting Mounjaro or continuing treatment, your clinician will recommend the appropriate dose based on your response, side effects and treatment history.

  1. Complete your assessment

Tell us about your health, current medicines, weight history, previous treatment and goals.

  2. Clinical review

A LIVVE clinician checks eligibility, safety, interactions and whether Mounjaro is an appropriate option.

  3. Prescription and delivery

If approved, the prescribed strength is dispensed with clear instructions and discreet delivery.

  4. Ongoing support

Reviews cover weight progress, appetite, nutrition, side effects, dose suitability and longer-term planning.
